As we turn toward warmer weather, many of us find ourselves torn between knitting and gardening. Now you can accomplish both with these wee little planters, knit in 100% non-superwash wool.

Natural wool is incredibly beneficial in the garden. Wool is biodegradable, and as it breaks down it releases nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium into the soil. So, given that we all tend to accrue little bits and bobs of wool leftovers, what better use for them than as a plastic-free alternative to seedling planters! Wool is highly absorbent and the perfect vehicle for watering your seedling pots from the bottom (in a tray), so water can wick up slowly.

  • Yarn: You can use almost any weight of non-superwash wool, as long as you adjust your needles to create a loose Stockinette stitch fabric.
  • Needles and Gauge: Gauge is not crucial. For my samples I used Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift (fingering weight) and size US 5 (3.75mm) needles and rough farm wool on size 10.5 (6.5mm) needles. This creates a loose-ish fabric that will allow water and roots to pass through, but also will contain your soil effectively. You can use almost any weight of yarn, as long as you adjust your needles to create a loose Stockinette stitch fabric.
