Steinbeck coined Route 66 as the “Mother Road”, the migrant path of those seeking better fortunes out West during the Great Depression. I pictured the bright colors of our Big Texan yarn “traveling” across a backdrop of the more subtle neutral color, meandering in a way not unlike those who have wandered West looking for their futures.
The slipped stitch pattern of this hat can create a less-elastic fabric than regular Stockinette stitch, so achieving gauge is very important. Because it can be difficult to read gauge in the pattern stitch, I have also provided a Stockinette stitch gauge for swatching purposes. Be sure to block your swatch to measure gauge after the fabric has relaxed.
If you wish to make a larger size hat, go up one needle size for each section (i.e. a US 10.5 6.5mm for the brim and US 11 8.0mm for the pattern section).
- Yarn: 109 yards each of 2 colors bulky weight yarn
- Needles: size US 10 (6.0mm) and US 10.5 (6.5mm)
- Gauge: 13 sts x 16 rows = 4" in Stockinette stitch on larger needles
- Size: adult, to fit 21-23" head circumference
