shop sample: melt the ice traditional handknit hat

red traditional handknit hat with a tassel modeled by a woman

ATTENTION IF LOOKING TO PURCHASE A HAT OR DONATE A HAT:

The yarn shop in MN, where the Melt the ICE Hat pattern originated, has created a way to sell pre-made hats to people looking to purchase them by matching up with people willing to donate. This article explains it and has links to a "Pre-made hat interest form" and a "Hat donation form".

Melt the ICE Hat by Paul S. Neary is an historically inspired handknit hat. In the 1940s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. All proceeds from the sale of this pattern go to the immigrant aid agencies who will distribute the funds to those impacted by the actions of ICE.

In the samples shown here, Sarah (above) knit a DK version using Berroco Ultra Wool DK, and Ingrid (below) knit the worsted weight version of this design. The pattern can be knit in fingering, DK, or worsted weight. Yarn ideas for this hat are below. • Can the hat be purchased ready made or do you have a list of people who do so. Thank you so much. This is a great idea.

We don’t have finished hats to sell, but maybe someone reading your comment here will take you up on this and make one on commission. We also have a Facebook post about this hat pattern with many comments, so if you are a FB user suggest commenting there and asking if anyone is interested. Post is here:  https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1ALvshu4LW/

    Thank you!

  • I, too, am interested in purchasing from someone, especially someone local to MN. My thumbs are too arthritic for trying to learn how to do anything like this. :) Will refresh this from time to time to see if there’s anyone interested.
